Address Book Policies in Exchange SP2

A major feature missing since Exchange 2007 was the ability to manage access to address lists.  Organizational virtualization was the way to handle it in E2K7 and now with E2k10 SP2 we can now manage the same process with address book policies.  Technet article gives full details here.

It’s always DNS’s fault till it’s not

When Office 365 went live last week I signed up, sorry I don’t do beta.  The sign up process did not take long at all.  I got a domain name that was an extension of my current one, chathamtech.onmicrosoft.com.  So far so good.  The next steps were to add to the accepted domains list the two other domains I wanted to use and to change the UPN to something easier.

Following the instructions, I added a verification text record to my DNS records at Network Solutions.  When I tried to verify the domains that failed with a warning message that said it might take 72 hours to propagate.  Now I’m teaching an Exchange class and coming down with a summer cold at the same time so while I’m checking to see if the verification thing is going to work I’m thinking that I’ll deal with this when I get home.

Come Saturday I want to migrate my wife’s and my accounts.  Go to the Admin page, verification is still not working.  First instinct is that it is always DNS’s fault till it’s not so I call Network Solutions and start there.  All is good on their end so I tried a redo on the verification record .  After waiting a couple of hours nothing changes.  After poking around on the web I find that plan B is to add an MX record and try the verification thing again.  Low and behold everything now works.

I was then able to set up the UPN’s the way I wanted, although I had to give my wife’s account admin rights so that I could go in and change my UPN.  Added all the necessary records in DNS and my stops flowing to my old hosted provider and is now going to Office 365.  Which is by the way pretty nice once set up.

I have been doing Exchange for a very long time, V4 to be precise.  If it took me a while to get it going then something is really wrong here.  If a wizard GUI is not going to work as expected it needs to get fixed ASAP Microsoft.

SharePoint 2010 class labfiles

For those who asked me for the files, it appears that anti-virus software picks up the scripts as a virus.  I’m attaching the file to my blog.  This should work.  Email me if it does not   Labfiles

I’ve been meaning to update this for several weeks and finally got around to it.  Good news is that the delay allowed me to add a bunch of SharePoint 2010 links.
